My quilts have been on exhibit at several shows including QuiltCon and Houston Quilt Festival and have been published in journals including Curated Quilts. I am very active in the modern quilting community in Houston and have spent several years on the Board of The Houston Modern Quilt Guild, most recently as the President. More of my work can be seen on Instagram @PieceLoveQuilt.
I have been creative pretty much all my life. My Mom taught me how to sew when I was very young. We created a sewing room in a walk-in closet in one of our guest bedrooms. One of the first things I remember sewing was an outfit for my talent show performance at school, it was probably 6th grade. One of my girlfriends and I sang and danced to Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walking". I wore a yellow midriff top with bell bottoms! We actually won!
I was in middle school when I made my first quilt for my best friend. Her favorite colors were pink and green and she was super "girly". It was a simple quilt with pink and green print squares. I didn't actually "quilt" it but I did tie embroidery thread through the corners of each square. She loved the quilt and her sweet daughter has now inherited it 40 years later!
I continued to sew once my daughter was born. I loved making sweet little dresses for her! I also enjoyed making her Halloween costumes - she was the cutest little Raggedy Ann ever! In addition, I created things for my house including pillows, bedding and even made made balloon shades!
Then all of a sudden I got super busy raising my family and working in very stressful corporate positions and didn't have the time to devote to sewing. Fortunately now I am at a point in my life that allows me to unleash my creative side! In 2012, I started to create quilts and I am now hooked! I dedicate my studio time to creating a range of high quality one of a kind quilts, pillows and other home decor items. I tend to gravitate to more modern aesthetics but also like to blend the traditions of the past with a trendy look.
In 2015 I became a grandmother to amazing twin boys. This opened up a whole new list of items for me to create starting with their nursery bedding and curtains. I have made numerous baby quilts for them along with small tag lovies, storage containers, bags and lots of clothes!
I am addicted to fabric! I can't get enough of it. Just like every sewist, I have enough fabric in my stash to last me a lifetime but I keep buying more. I love every bit of the process of creating a quilt. Choosing your fabrics, deciding what you are going to create - whether it's your own design, or you are following a pattern or even modifying a pattern, cutting your gorgeous fabric into pieces, sewing all those pieces together, ironing, placing the blocks on your design wall, making the sandwich, choosing the thread for quilting, deciding how to quilt it and sewing the binding on by hand. It's a long process and then the ultimate is seeing your finished work fresh out of the dryer, all crinkly and ready to be cuddled with! It's the same concept with any other project whether it's a pillow, baby romper or a zippered pouch.
